Shenyang Normal University {Contract Terms and Information}

Shenyang Normal University sets high standards for the students and staff. The
students must have high scores to get into the university and the staff is
continuously undergoing professional development training to keep up with the
current trends in education. We have teacher exchange programs with the
University of Illinois in our sister city, Chicago, and promote bilingual
education across the curriculum, not only in the English Department.

Workload: 12-16 hours/week

Monthly Salary (as of Autumn 2005) – based on experience:

BA (or equivalent)
(12 hours) 3,000 RMB ($362USD)
(16 hours) 5,000 RMB ($604USD)

BA + TESOL/TEFL certificate
(or) MA (or equivalent)
(12 hours) 3,250 RMB ($392USD)
(16 hours) 5,250 RMB ($634USD)

MA TESOL, or equivalent***
(12 hours) 3,500 RMB ($423USD)
(16 hours) 5,500 RMB ($665USD)

Please note: Regardless of experience, all teachers receive 3,000 RMB during the
winter break, as well as the summer break, if continuing at SNU the following
academic year.

***MA TESOL (or equivalent) teachers will have the ability to choose their
schedules, design their own classes (according to university needs), and study
Chinese as FT students if desired.

Airfare: The ticket is reimbursed (RMB) upon the successful completion of the
1-yr contract.

Telephone allowance: 100 RMB/month (Teacher can call directly overseas or use a
calling card from home, can receive incoming calls on both external and internal
phones, and can use internet dial-up if desired.)

Campus Housing (free): furnished one-bedroom apartment on campus
• living room: sofa, air conditioner/heater, TV (BBC and other English programs available), desk, chairs, university Internet LAN access ready
• kitchen (electric): fan/vent, hot plate, wok, rice-cooker, hot water boiler, refrigerator
• bathroom: shower, sink, toilet, and washing machine
• bedroom: full-size bed, wardrobe, laundry line, shelves, internal and external phone

*Note: no pets allowed in campus housing
*Note: teachers may choose to live off campus with stipend of 800 RMB/month

Meal Discount: Mon-Fri, buffet lunches provided for 1.5 RMB in the teachers’
cafeteria

Holidays & Vacations:
• National Day (October 1, 2005), one week
• Spring Festival (Jan 29, 2006): The official break is from January 17-Feb 19, 2006, but vacation generally begins December 24th and ends with the start of the new semester.
• May Day (May 1, 2006), one week

Gymnasium: Foreign teachers may use the sports facilities for a minimal fee.

Free Chinese Classes: If teaching full-time, foreign teachers may attend 5
hours/week, schedule permitting, without paying tuition.

Library: Teachers may get a library card with a 200 RMB deposit, which will be
returned to them upon departure from the university.

Teaching Conditions:
• Offices: there are currently 2 small offices shared by
all of the foreign English language teachers, with computer/printing access.
• Photocopying: available with one-week advance notice
• Equipment: facilities available upon request for showing DVDs and VHS tapes
• Class size: usually a range of 25-40 students/class
• Library with teaching journals & resources available for foreign language teachers

Prerequisites for international teachers:
• BA, MA or equivalent degrees/experience [those with TESOL/TEFL certificates (or equivalent) and/or MA TESOL (or equivalent) degrees will be given preference]
• Native-like Speaker of English: must be articulate, with clear pronunciation
• Experience: 1-2 years professional teaching experience preferred: university level, English or other related fields in the academic world
• Character: must be diligent, punctual, prepared, enthusiastic, and considerate of others
• Health: must be physically healthy and mentally competent to fulfill teaching duties

Materials required for application:
• Résumé/CV: one copy
• References: at least 2 recommendation letters with signatures, provided by applicant’s professors, teachers, or colleagues in the teaching or academic
field
• Passport: one copy of signed valid passport (expiration date at least 6 months after contract ends)
• Photos: one passport-sized color photo (once offered the job, applicant must submit at least 6 additional photos, two 2” & four 1”)

Visa Application: Once position is offered and accepted, usually done via
e-mail, the applicant is responsible for attaining a visa and getting a health
examination.

Visa Process:
1. Wait for an official invitation letter from Shenyang Normal University.
2. Go to the nearest Chinese consulate and apply for a “z” employment visa.
