About College of Chinese Language & Culture Jinan University

Jinan University, established in 1906, is a comprehensive university under the joint leadership of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the Education Ministry. She is one of China ' s 100 key universities for the 21 st century. Adhering to the principle of "Oriented to students from overseas, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan", Jinan University now has 23,752 full time students, including 10,609 students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and foreign countries, comprising the largest number of overseas students in China.

Known as the Paramount Academy for Overseas Chinese, Jinan University has always dedicated herself to the education of Chinese language & culture, and pre-university for overseas students. As a result, the College of Chinese Language and Culture of Jinan University was founded in 1953 to offer programs of Chinese language & culture and pre-university to overseas students. She was conferred as the “ National Base of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language ” by The Education Ministry, and “ Overseas Chinese Education Base ” by Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council. She is also one of the ten key institutions that facilitate Chinese teaching in neighboring countries under the guidance of The China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language.

She has become the biggest in scale and the greatest in strength for offering the programs of Chinese as a second or foreign language and overseas Chinese education in South China. The major of Teaching Chinese as a Second or Foreign Language at the college was conferred the title of “ Famous Brand of Guangdong Province ” . She is one of the HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) centers, and is also a training and testing center for the National Certificate of Teachers ' Ability to Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. In addition she is an examination venue for the National Entrance Examination of Chinese Universities for overseas students and also the main examination venue for the Joint Entrance Examination of Jinan University and Huaqiao University for overseas students.

    

The college consists of Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second or Foreign language, Department of Overseas Chinese, Department of Applied Linguistics, Pre-University Department, Correspondence Course Department, Overseas Chinese Education Institute, Overseas Chinese Researching Center, and Modern Educational Technology Center. Currently, there are 204 staff members in the college, among whom there are 28 full professors and associate professors, and 55 lecturers; 21 of the staff hold doctorate degrees, 41 hold master degrees and 14 are doctorate or master candidates ' supervisors.

The college offers multi-form, multi-level courses in various forms. In the year 2005, there were altogether 4,057 students at different levels, in which 126 were graduate students, 169 undergraduates from mainland China, 1,872 pre-university students, 1,157 full time international students for Chinese learning, 421 students in training courses, and 312 international students of correspondence courses. Located in Tianhe District, the new downtown and cultural center of Guangzhou, the college has easy access to metro and intercity commuting systems. Lying at the foot of a hillside, the college boasts large patches of greenery, fresh air, sports grounds and convenient entertainment and living facilities.
