Guest-greeting drinking

Posted 2017/2/16

Guest-greeting drinking is a custom unique to the Miao ethnic people. When guests come to a Miao village in the mountain, chances are they’ll be greeted with several wine blockades on the bumpy paths in the field. The road-blocking wine accompanied by songs may be three or five rounds, with twelve rounds at most. The last blockade is at the gate of the village, where there’s usually a small and exquisite wooden tower, with a pair of ox horn wine cups hanging in the middle of entrance of the tower. Holding ox horn wine cups with both hands, two beautifully-dressed village girls and the elderly clan head offer wine to the guests in turn. The guests, however, should remember not to take the cup with their hands, otherwise, the hosts will let go the cup and the guests are expected to empty the whole cup.
