"ge" introduction

Posted 2017/3/14

In oracle bone inscriptions, the character looks like a long weapon: the long vertical stroke is the body of the long weapon, while the top part is the blade used to thrust. “Ge” was an ancient Chinese long weapon used to thrust or draw the opponent. Usually, the weapon with a long handle was attached with a dagger protruding horizontally at the top end, with the blade fixed inward to draw or thrust the enemy. Initially, “ge” was evolved from primitive tools such as stone knife, stone ax, stone sickle etc to stone “ge” and bronze “ge”. The shape and size of “ge” are diversified, with the standard one being composed of head, handle, and bronze zun.
