Ink-and-wash painting is a kind of Chinese painting. One of the most important skills used in Chinese ink-and-wash paintings is “shui yun mo zhang” (水晕墨章) created by Wang Meng, a distinguished painter during the Yuan Dynasty.
“Shui yun mo zhang” means to mix ink with water to achieve various effects on the paper because under influence of water, the ink will have some new changes so that the ink texture will become more vivid and color brighter. The skill of “shui yun mo zhang” can not only manifest ups and downs of things but also display varied changes of things through density and dryness/wetness of ink and water.
