A plank path is a path built along the face of a cliff. In China, the building of such paths started way back in the Warring States Period.
The common ways of building a plank path are digging holes on the cliff walls, inserting wooden beams into the holes, laying planks on top, and covering the planks with earth and rocks. In some cases, steps are chiseled, forming a ladder for scaling the cliff. And there are tunnels and semi-tunnels dug through the steep mountains. One plank path may be built in different ways for different sections depending on actual terrain situations.
Today, modern road networks may be commonplace, but in remote mountainous areas, plank paths are still in use, providing convenience for pedestrians and animals.
