A Holy Lake for Red Denomination of Tibetan Buddhism

Posted 2017/11/15

Cuogao in Tibetan means green water. The Cuogao Lake lies 50 kilometers to Gongbujiangda County in Tibet. It is a holy lake for Red Denomination of Tibetan Buddhism.

Shaped like a crescent embedded in the canyon, the Cuogao Lake is about 12 kilometers long, a hundreds to thousands meters wide, and about 60 meters deep. Surrounding snow mountains and virgin forests cast their refection in the crystal clear water, birds such as sand bird and white crane fly freely, and various fish swim in the lake.

The Cuozonggongba Temple on the mid-lake Zhaxi Island was constructed in the late Tang Dynasty. Stones on the island are carved into various shapes of animals and figures of Buddha. The two-storey Cuozonggongba Temple is built with mud and wood and has figures of Maitreya Buddha, one-thousand-hand Kwan-yin, and boy and girl attendants. Standing in the south part of the temple are a peach tree and a pine whose branches join together. When spring comes, the verdant pine sets off the peachblossom and is very beautiful. Monks in the temple and disciples all come to worship here by boat.
