Story of the Heritage Site
Taipei Story House is the only Tudor style heritage building in Taiwan. It was built in 1913 by a Taipei tea merchant Chen Chao-chun on the Yuanshan section of the Keelung River in Taipei City for the purpose of entertaining clients. In 1998, the Taipei City Government designated this building a heritage site, and in 2003 Ms. K.C. Chen sponsored the establishment of Taipei Story House at this location.
The mission of Taipei Story House is to introduce visitors to life and culture in Taiwan over the past century, and to promote the re-use of historical buildings in Taiwan. Since 2003, Taipei Story House has organized a wide range of exhibition and cultural activities, providing visitors easy access to history and breathing new life into an important heritage site.
Architecture
Taipei Story House is a half-timbered faux Tudor style building, which is rare in Taiwan. The first floor features a brick load-bearing wall and a door with ionic style columns. The second floor is a wood structure with woven branches on the exterior wall. The Gothic-style house tower and chimney are made of brick, and the curved gable is covered with bronze tiles, on which the verdigris caused by aging reveals the trace of time.
The tower above the entrance is inlaid with green, yellow, and red stained glass. Inside the house are two fireplaces and art nouveau tiles featuring natural and floral patterns. The overall configuration of the interior space, together with the outdoor balconies and terraces, exhibit a classic style and are closely integrated with the surrounding landscape.
The European-style garden of Taipei Story House consists of more than one hundred kinds of flowers. With a pond, red brick dwarf wall, curved paths, and the Tudor style heritage building, it becomes a secret garden in the midst of the bustling city.
