In Mongolian, "Kokoxili" means "Cyan Mountain Ridge" or "Beautiful Maid". Located in the territory of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in the southwest of Qinghai Province, Kokoxili Nature Reserve is one of the zones with most perfectly-preserved primitive ecological environment in the world. Also, it is one of the nature reserves with the largest area, highest altitude and most abundant resources of wild animals in China.
Covering an area of 45,000 square kilometers, Kokoxili Nature Reserve has a large proportion of “Special Species on Plateau” in its ecological chain. In this area live a total of 29 species of mammals and 54 species of birds, of which five species are under national Grade I protective (snow leopard, Equus kiang, wild yak, chiru and white-lipped deer), eight under national Grade II protective animals and eight species of rare birds. Special biological species in Kokoxili Nature Reserve are rare flora and fauna not only in China, but also in the whole world, for they are of great importance in terms of academic research and natural protection.
Kokoxili is featured by severe climate and reverse natural conditions, which make it impossible for human to live for a long time. It is hereby called “The Third Pole in the World” and “Forbidden Zone for Life”. For this reason, Kokoxili offers advantaged living conditions for wild animals on plateau and serves as a “Paradise of Wild Animals”. Kokoxili National Nature Reserve was established in the late 1997.
