located in Leqing County of Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, Mount Yandang, located in Leqing County of Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, a 300 km-distance to Hangzhou and a 70 km-distance to Wenzhou, is one of the most famous mountains in the coastal region in the southeastern China. The history of the scenic spot dates back to the period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420-581) and it became flourishing in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Covering an area of 450 square kilometers, it is composed of eight scenic areas and over 500 scenic spots, the most famous of which are the Three Best Wonders: the Spiritual Peaks, the Spiritual Rocks, and the Big Dragon Waterfall. The gorgeous landscapes of Mount Yangdang deeply influence and inspire poets, painters and scholars. Many works, including more than 5000 poems and 400 cliff carvings and inscriptions as well as Nange Paifang (literally south pavilion archways), are the invaluable heritage of history and culture.
Geographically, Mount Yandang experienced volcano eruption, sea water erosion and glaciers and floods scouring in geological transformation, which has led to the formation of its grotesque landscapes featuring deep valleys and myriads of peaks. It is therefore called “a museum of geomorphologic figuration”. It has also inspired scientist for further studies. For example, after visiting Mount Yandang, Shen Kuo the famous scientist in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) proposed the theory of the eroding effect of flowing water to terrains, which was 600 years earlier than that in European academe.
Mount Yandang boasts a variety of natural beauties. Xu Xiake, the famous traveler in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) felt a great pity for being incapable of climbing the mountain and enjoying all the beautiful sceneries. But today, with the help of modern transportation vehicles, most of the scenic spots are accessible to common people.
