-About the Chengdu Sichuan Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Introduction
The giant panda is a national treasure. It is a symbol of world bio-diversity conservation, peace and friendship. The panda is scarcely distributed across Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, numbering no more than 1,000 in the wild. If nothing is done about the panda population, these black and white animals will be wiped out from this earth - forever.

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is one of the most important centers in China for the captive conservation of giant pandas. Located about 10km from the Chengdu downtown area, the Research Base is situated on 600 acres in China Panda City, so named by the government in 1993 when the began.

There are currently 23 giant pandas and over 20 red pandas housed in large natural habitats at the Chengdu Research Base and the Chengdu Zoo. That represents about one-third of the entire captive giant panda population in the world. These open spaces allow pandas to thrive in a natural setting and serve as an excellent recreational area.

The Chengdu Research Base also houses black-necked cranes, white storks, 14 species of bamboo, and 300 other plant species.

History
In March 1987, the Chengdu Municipal Government established the Chengdu Research Base. A decade of construction led to the completion of the first two phases of development. The first and second phases, covering 93 acres, contain research buildings, laboratories, veterinary facilities, a welcoming center, the Giant Panda Museum and natural-looking enclosures for the giant pandas, red pandas and black-necked cranes.

The third phase of the project covering 507 acres plants enclosures to simulate the wild habitat of giant pandas. This "natural habitat" is used to prepare captive-born pandas for eventual reintroduction into the wild.

Giant Panda Museum
The Giant Panda Museum is also part of The Chengdu Research Base. Established in 1992, the museum is the only one in China focusing entirely on the critically endangered giant panda.

Research Expertise
Many talented and knowledgeable scientists work at the Chengdu Research Base, which has the most technologically advanced facilities in China. Cooperative research is ongoing between Research Base scientists and scientists in universities and research institutions throughout China and other countries. Some of the lab work revolves around giant panda embryo transfer and genome resource banking for endangered species. The Chengdu Research Base represents China's highest goals for conservation and wildlife management. Two key methods are involved in the conservation of endangered species: 1) protection and preservation of wild habitat and; 2) establishment and maintenance of a self-sustaining captive population.

Increasing the captive population of giant pandas remains the Chengdu Research Base's current goal, with reintroduction to the wild as an ultimate goal. The Chengdu Research Base hopes to help ensure the survival of giant pandas and to increase the chances for giant pandas to coexist with humans.

The Chengdu Research Base has received the following awards in recent years:
Global 500 Award from the United Nations Environmental Planning Department;
China's Gold Medal for scientific technology of plants, the highest award given for China's environmental protection;
Excellent National Project for the Comprehensive Improvement of Environment Award.
