Northwest University for Nationalities was established in August 1950, directly under the leadership of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission. It was the first minorities'university following the founding of the PRC. Wang Feng who was a proletarian revolutionary of the older generation was appointed the first chief. The predecessor of the school was the Lanzhou branch of the Northwest People’s Revolution University. From February1950, Northwest University for Nationalities became established on its current foundations. In April of 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education and the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, it was renamed Northwest University for Nationalities.
Northwest University for Nationalities is divided into two campuses. The original campus in Cheng Guan and the new campus in Yu Zhong, covering an area of 2880 Chinese mu. After 60 years of continuous development, the school has formed a co-ordinated strategy with undergraduate courses as its main focus, while also offering postgraduate courses, preparatory courses, continuing & vocational education and international education. This university offers comprehensive multi-disciplinary classes at the three levels of bachelors, masters, and doctors degrees. So far it has cultivated more than 80,000 people of all types of talent for the country.
